New Music, New Site(sort of), New Life

The delightfully bouncy synth on the latest Metric record, Pagans in Vegas is moving me along quite nicely right now.  It has been a while, I know.  I’ve gotten into this habit of only updating this site when I have a new record and that is usually once a year…if I keep up with my challenge…more on the challenge in a second.  So, I am here to update and make a declaration that I will try to update more often and try to get this blog back to being a bit more personal.  The original plan for this site was to make it a home base for all the music I was working on and other stuff.  I am going to try to take it back there.

Oh, the challenge.  I have challenged myself to put out one album each year, which is motivating and restrictive at the same time.  On one hand, each year I am putting something creative out into the world and that feels great.  On the other hand, it gives me some time constraints which forces me to make decisions.  It’s a good thing.  In the end, the music is for me, but if people enjoy it too… that would great.  Does this make any sense at all?  Well, it does to me.  Anyway, this is my challenge to myself and I love it.  I mean, think about it…whenever you complete something, it gives you this great feeling.  This challenge keeps me going.

Here we go…

New Music – I am putting the finishing touches on my latest full length album called,  Community of Thieves.  I hope to get this done in…sometime soon.  Before the end of the year…I hope.  I am happy with it.  I feel like it is a bit more rocking compared to the sometimes quieter music I have put out.

Also, I have been playing drums and doing some vocals in a super top-secret project called, Mr. Pitiful with my buds and brothers(they are brothers, but aren’t we all brothers?), Ryan and Justin.  I am having a blast playing with them and tunes are pretty sweet too.

New Site(sort of) – I picked a new theme/template and updated the albums page.  I took a picture in McGolrick Park, which is one of my favorite places in my neighborhood.  See the picture of trees.  I also changed the tagline.

New Life – I got married, so that is pretty great.  We got married in Brooklyn and then travelled around Belgium for our honeymoon.  It was amazing.

Also, the New Life part of blog post title is referring to me trying to breathe some new life into this site.  I really like posting my thoughts and music and other stuff on here, so I am going to try to do it more often.  Fingers crossed.

At this point the Metric album is almost done and I feel pretty good about it.  Go check it out.

Thoughts, the end of Earth Science…

So, I just walked in the door of my apartment and continue to have this unsettled, nervous feeling that I haven’t been able to shake for the last few days.  The band I played drums in, Earth Science is over.  As I was saying, I just walked in the door…I was coming from the studio I had shared with Earth Science for the last few years.  I just unpacked my drums and set them up in the studio where they will stay for a while.  We just played our last show this past Saturday.  The band is disbanding after writing and recording many songs, playing many shows and having a blast doing it.  I will miss playing with these guys, playing those songs and all the great times we had together.  We decided to stop playing together because one of our guitar players, Dino, is moving with his wife and child to Thailand.  He urged us to keep going, but there is no way we could ever replace him.  Instead, we are going our separate ways for now.

Now, that feeling I was talking about.  I had the same one when I left The Keepaway years ago.  I have been playing drums since I was about 9 years old and will never stop, but it is kind of shaking me up not to be playing drums in a band right now.  Luckily, I can keep my kit set up in this studio and knock around every once in a while to keep the dust from building.

As you can see from this website, I have been writing and recording songs as Joseph Albert for just over 6 years now and have recently started playing out again.  My plan at this moment is to make Joseph Albert my number one music priority.  I owe it to myself to play out more, record more and to continue enjoy doing this.  Now, you might be thinking, Joe…you have been doing just that all these years.  You are right, but I feel the need to declare it for some reason.  I have a bunch of fun ideas, songs and other stuff coming down the pipeline, so stay tuned.  And knowing me, I might end up playing the drums again soon.  And so, on a positive note…I’ll keep this whole thing open-ended.

Music is such a huge part of my life and has been since I was a child and I know I will never stopping creating and appreciating it.  I will miss Earth Science, and will never forget how much I loved playing with Dino, Jan, Steve and Kayne.

Thanks for listening, reading and supporting!

It is the year 2012

Hello and welcome to a new post.  2012 is now well underway and I have been trying to make time to put up a new post…so here you go:

As you can see, the last time I put an update…up?  I will try that again.  The last time I posted an update(there you go) was back in October 2011.  At that point I had finished my new album and was going to hand it off to my friend Kayne to edit.  Ok, fast forward to now, over 3 months…where have I been???  Let’s just say, work and holidays and other stuff can really make time fly.  And where is the album you ask?  Around the time that I finished my album, the band I play drums in called Earth Science was working on their full length.  The aforementioned Kayne, who plays in that band with me, was busy working on that album not only playing on it, but engineering it.  Busy guy.

So, expect to hear some new music from Earth Science very soon and hopefully new Joseph Albert music soon as well.  To hold you off a bit, I just recorded a video of me playing a song off the new album.  It is called Where I Live off the upcoming full length called Via Oxygen.  See below:

I hope to get back to posting on a more regular basis, but only time will tell.  I will put up more videos very soon so please come back.  Oh and what to expect this year???  A new full length album, live performances and beer(if you know what I mean).

Thanks for reading!

Hello old friend.

I feel a bit out of breath as I write this blog post.  The last time I posted was back in the very beginning of March…the 7th to be exact.  And so the reason I feel out of breath is because I feel as though I have been running up until this very moment.  So…let me catch my breath, compose myself and let you in on what I have been up to.

As some of you know, I live in a wonderful little neighborhood in northern Brooklyn called Greenpoint and recently moved from one apartment to another a few blocks away.  Moving and setting up the apartment has been very time consuming, stressful, but completely awesome at the same time!  I haven’t had time to write a post or do much music stuff here, but I am now back in the swing of things.  Oh, also, Time Warner took their sweet time coming to install internet in my apartment and I just got it today…I have 66 podcasts to listen to so this is going to be a short post.

Also in awesome news…I have been playing the drums in another project that I can honestly say is one of the most fulfilling and fun bands I have ever been in.  Check us out, we are called Earth Science and have an EP that is available for download.  We played one show so far and have a few others coming up.  If you like instrumental post rock…you will dig on this.

Ok, I am signing off and don’t be disappointed that I didn’t give you more.  I will be back very soon with more exciting new things to tickle your fancy.

Thanks for reading!!!

Joseph Albert!

I was a man with a plan…

I am writing this first post and trying to come up with some intelligent and important sounding words to catch your attention and show you that I am serious…seriously writing a blog post.  And as my fingers touch the keyboard and I search my mind, I hear a song called, We Were Young, by a band called Raised By Swans, off their 2010 album titled No Ghostless Place. This band is one of the many bands I am listening to these days and that song captured the moment just right.  I love when that happens, does it ever happen to you?  I am constantly listening to my iPod, and when I am doing something, going somewhere or going to meet up with someone and the music perfectly syncs up and adds to the moment, it is an amazing feeling and well…it’s cool, so I hope it happens to you.

So, at this moment…the Joseph Albert project is moving forward writing new songs and hoping to record a new full length before the year is over.  So far, I have released an EP digitally called Inventions and a full length digitally and physically called Night Time Astronaut. I plan to get back out there a play more shows, last year I played a bunch and am looking forward to doing a lot more this year…so stay tuned!

This blog will be about my music, but I will also be posting about whatever I feel like at that particular time.  I hope you are as excited as I am!

Oh and please check out these links: – yeah, man – another band I play in
