New Music, New Site(sort of), New Life

The delightfully bouncy synth on the latest Metric record, Pagans in Vegas is moving me along quite nicely right now.  It has been a while, I know.  I’ve gotten into this habit of only updating this site when I have a new record and that is usually once a year…if I keep up with my challenge…more on the challenge in a second.  So, I am here to update and make a declaration that I will try to update more often and try to get this blog back to being a bit more personal.  The original plan for this site was to make it a home base for all the music I was working on and other stuff.  I am going to try to take it back there.

Oh, the challenge.  I have challenged myself to put out one album each year, which is motivating and restrictive at the same time.  On one hand, each year I am putting something creative out into the world and that feels great.  On the other hand, it gives me some time constraints which forces me to make decisions.  It’s a good thing.  In the end, the music is for me, but if people enjoy it too… that would great.  Does this make any sense at all?  Well, it does to me.  Anyway, this is my challenge to myself and I love it.  I mean, think about it…whenever you complete something, it gives you this great feeling.  This challenge keeps me going.

Here we go…

New Music – I am putting the finishing touches on my latest full length album called,  Community of Thieves.  I hope to get this done in…sometime soon.  Before the end of the year…I hope.  I am happy with it.  I feel like it is a bit more rocking compared to the sometimes quieter music I have put out.

Also, I have been playing drums and doing some vocals in a super top-secret project called, Mr. Pitiful with my buds and brothers(they are brothers, but aren’t we all brothers?), Ryan and Justin.  I am having a blast playing with them and tunes are pretty sweet too.

New Site(sort of) – I picked a new theme/template and updated the albums page.  I took a picture in McGolrick Park, which is one of my favorite places in my neighborhood.  See the picture of trees.  I also changed the tagline.

New Life – I got married, so that is pretty great.  We got married in Brooklyn and then travelled around Belgium for our honeymoon.  It was amazing.

Also, the New Life part of blog post title is referring to me trying to breathe some new life into this site.  I really like posting my thoughts and music and other stuff on here, so I am going to try to do it more often.  Fingers crossed.

At this point the Metric album is almost done and I feel pretty good about it.  Go check it out.

Also, you can check out my music here.

This is an update

Hello everyone,

It has been a few months since my last update, so here I am.  Now that the holidays are past us(happy to all of those) and the new year is here(happy to that too), it’s business time.  I have finished recording the demo versions of the songs for the next full length.  I am hoping to start with some studio updates soon where I will be recording final versions of these songs.

In case you are curious, my process is like this, although it does change from time to time:  Basically, I have all the songs that I want to use on the full length written to about 95%.  Then, I do a quick recording of the whole album so I can listen to it and get a feel for it.  Then I go through them, making changes and playing around with things.  Then I listen to them again.  Then I re-record the songs for good.

I hope to have this recorded and out by this spring, but we shall see.

Also, a good friend of mine has a website called The DK Lounge and I am doing beer reviews for them.  The first one went up today, check it out – Beer Review: Dogfish Head Olde School Barleywine

I hope you all like the new look of the website, it feels good to change things up a bit!  Ok that is all for now, I will get back to you soon with some new songs!

Update and stuff

Good day,

I am on my lunch break at work and thought I would give you all a quick update.

The last few weeks have been rough for a lot of people out there.  I feel very lucky to have made it through hurricane Sandy without any major problems.  My heart goes out to those who have lost so much.  I cannot even imagine what they are going through.

With all the transportation problems, I was at home for a few days after the hurricane hit.  I was sorta stranded in Greenpoint, which is fine because I love it here.  Luckily, I had power and I started to demo my new full length.  I am very excited about it.  So far it is looking like 10 songs and I hope to post some clips soon.  I am still in the very early stages and things can change, but I am hoping to have the whole thing properly recorded and released this spring.

I am looking into booking some shows ASAP.  If anyone wants to book me, my email address is

I have been listening to some really great albums recently and wanted to share them with you:

I was very excited about the Benjamin Gibbard solo album titled Former Lives and it stands up.  A really awesome record and I saw him play at The Town Hall in NYC last week and it was wonderful.  Another album that is really great is A Shut-In’s Prayer by Advance Base.  He was the opener for Benjamin Gibbard and I know him from his Casiotone for the Painfully Alone project.  Good live show and good album…get on it!  If you are a fan of Grandaddy, their front man Jason Lytle put out his 2nd solo album titled The Department of Disappearance.  This album is…Jason Lytle…it is great and if you like his work, you will not be disappointed.  I recently picked up The Helio Sequence new album Negotiations.  I became a fan of these guys a few years ago and this album is great!

Oh and I revisited By A Thread’s album The Last of the Daydreams recently.  This album came out in 1999 and really holds up.  This album is so good and it has been a long time since I listened to it.

Ok, that is all for now, come back soon!

Studio Update #6 – Via Oxygen

Hello everyone,

This is the last of my “studio” updates.  I am proud to say that my work on the album is complete and now is the time for me to hand it off to my good friend Kayne, who edited my last 2 albums.

I am very excited for this album.  I have been writing in/on a timeline of my life and I am slowly closing in on current day Joseph Albert Mauro…exciting?  I think yes.  By the time I complete the next album, I will be very close.  I had written so many songs from years ago and want to record them first.

I really hope you all enjoyed my updates with the small and low-budget clips I have posted on my YouTube page.  I hope to post more videos soon.

I have decided to leave you with one last clip of the title track “Via Oxygen”…ENJOY!

Ok so, what now?  Honestly, I have been working on a lot of other songs throughout this recording process and would love to just keep recording and do another album right now. But, that might be a bit too crazy for me and I probably shouldn’t make promises I can’t keep.  That being said…I hope to start recording a another album sooner than later.  I am going to be busy with my other band Earth Science we are about to start recording our full length.

So, once Via Oxygen is all set to go, I will post up where you can get it.  And considering there wasn’t an album release show for Night Time Astronaut, I will probably do a show for both albums in the coming months.

Stay tuned for more news coming soon!!!

Studio Update #5 – Via Oxygen

It’s been about a month since I last posted an update and I wanted to stop in a let you know how the recording is going.  Right now, as I type this, I am about to start recording vocals and am super excited about it.  Between going away on some fun long weekend get aways, I have finished recording all the other instruments and have done some scratch vocals to get a feel for things.  Tonight…I start to record vocals.  I hope to have a video of a song clip soon to show you all how it is sounding, but only time will tell.

I hope you are all as excited as I am to have this recording finished!

Check back for more updates!

Studio Update #4 – Via Oxygen

Hello everyone,

I have been doing something on this album that I haven’t done in past recordings.  I am learning to play bass and record it at the same time.  It is pretty rough, but I am moving along and starting to get the hang of it.  It is an awesome challenge for me and I am super excited to take it on.  My recordings in the past few years have had bass sounds from my keyboard, so this is a huge step in the right direction.  Other than that, I am getting closer and closer to start recording vocals…so if we are all lucky, the next video clip will have some vocals on it!!!

It has been a little while since my last update and I would like to share with you a small clip of a new song called “Between The Camera And Me” which will be on my upcoming full length titled“Via Oxygen”

Thanks for reading and watching!!!
